Let's Talk Dirty ... OIL

One of my least favorite topics of conversation in the world is the price of gas.  “Gas prices” for short.  I think my aversion to the topic stems from the way in which gas prices are traditionally covered by mainstream media outlets, discussed at the barber shop, prayed for in churches, etc.  It’s an enormously complex interplay of politics, economics, ecology, culture, power, and much, much more but what I often see on the television or hear on the radio is a quick two minute analysis of the day’s market along with the price of a barrel of oil.  And then the news that prices at the pump aren’t going down anytime soon.  And that’s what people repeat—that doom’s day is near.  Times are certainly tough – and I am not minimizing the ripple effect that oil prices are having not only in this country but around the world – but “alternative” energy is not a new idea.  One only need to watch “Who Killed the Electric Car?” to get a tiny taste of what is / was / will have to be possible.

So—besides the obvious GO GREEN! connection – what does this have to do with Perfect Organics?  Recently we were asked by our friends at Coop America where we are members (www.coopamerica.org) if we wanted to be part of a letter to Virginia Governor Tim Kaine and Dominion CEO Thomas Farrell urging them to cancel plans of a proposed coal-fire power plant in Wise County, VA.  We viewed this as the perfect opportunity to voice our support of clean, renewable energy which is the future—not only in Virginia- but around the world.  What surprised me was how many news outlets (including Reuters and Yahoo!) picked up the story.  Yet another bit of proof that small, collective actions are the way to shift the tides...and hopefully in time...
